Did you know that caffeine is one of the most frequently used psychoactive drugs? It’s also the second most traded commodity. Without coffee, many people feel like they can’t get through their days.
Yet, in regards to sleep, it’s not a good mentality to adopt. To understand first what caffeine does, you must know that there is a chemical in your brain called adenosine that causes you to want to go to sleep. When you drink caffeine, it blocks adenosine and masks the feeling of sleepiness, thus fooling your brain into thinking you are no longer tired.
But let’s say it’s now 2AM and the caffeine starts to wear off. All the adenosine that’s been building up since you consumed caffeine will then hit you full on, leading to a “caffeine crash,” at which point caffeine won’t work for you anymore!
