The Effects of an Early Start Time

Most schools in the US have start times around 8AM in the morning, sometimes even earlier if students decide to take elective classes. For me, I woke up early every morning at 6AM in order to make it to school on time at 8AM. I remember always feeling so tired and wondering why school had to begin so early in order for us to succeed.

Now I realize that it didn’t.

Kyla L. Wahlstrom, Ph.D, conducted a study in the Edina, Minnesota school district involving later school start times and found incredible discoveries. I’ve attached the findings involving test scores merely because the point of most schools are for their students to achieve academically. However, beyond these findings are even more interesting findings tied to the behavior of students. Less depression was reported, alcohol/cigarette/caffeine use decreased, etc.

Why on earth are schools still choosing to begin so early???
